Mothers play an important role in a child’s life, and in this reflection, we honor the mothers who helped shape who we are today — through their courage, sacrifices, prayers, and unconditional love.
“In many ways, our mothers continue to live on through us — in the values they taught, the love they gave, and the strength they quietly carried every single day.”
Dennis was raised by a single mother, Mary. While serving in the Military, Mary balanced the demanding responsibilities of military life and motherhood as she raised her three children, with Dennis being the eldest.
According to my husband, life was not always easy growing up. Because of Mary’s work assignments, the family moved frequently from place to place.
Dennis describes his mother as a strong and courageous woman. She was fiercely independent and endured many challenges and difficult situations throughout her life.
He recalls often confiding in her, even at a young age, and receiving thoughtful advice about life and important decisions. Mary also had an eye for beauty. She loved decorating her home with lovely things and keeping everything organized.
Tragedy touched Mary’s life deeply. Both of her other children, Jimmy and Heather, passed away before she did, leaving Dennis as her only remaining child.
During the pandemic, Mary visited Dennis in Arizona while he was in the process of purchasing a piece of land he had often shared with her. During her visit, she slipped and fell in an accident, which led to a hospital stay and eventually a physical rehabilitation hospital, where she unexpectedly passed away.
Arlene’s relationship with her mother was very special. Growing up, people would often tell her that they were carbon copies of one another — not only physically, but also in personality.
Violy had a strong personality and a dominant character. She spoke honestly and fearlessly about what was on her mind. Her close friends fondly called her “Mother Superior” because of her nurturing and motherly nature.
She was a God-fearing woman who spent countless hours praying, reading the Bible, counseling women, and discipling them in their faith.
My mother taught me many valuable lessons in life. She taught me the importance of hard work and discipline, believing that both are essential ingredients for success.
Although we never had the opportunity to meet each other’s mothers, we often talked about them throughout our relationship — sharing stories, memories, and even wondering how they would respond to different situations in our lives.
Even though I never met my mother-in-law, I am deeply grateful to her for raising Dennis into the man he is today — resilient, hardworking, and kind.
In many ways, our mothers continue to live on through us — in the values they taught, the love they gave, the sacrifices they made, and the strength they quietly carried every single day.
To all the mothers out there — thank you. Thank you for the sleepless nights, the countless prayers, the sacrifices no one sees, and the unconditional love that shapes homes and hearts.
Whether you are raising children on your own, supporting your family behind the scenes, guiding your children through adulthood, or simply loving faithfully in the little everyday moments, your work matters more than words can express.
And to those whose mothers are already with the Lord, may their memories continue to inspire us to live lives filled with faith, courage, kindness, and love.
Today, we celebrate not only our mothers, Mary and Violy, but every mother whose love leaves a lasting imprint on the lives of their children.
“Kudos to our mothers — the quiet heroes of our lives.” ❤️
